TIPS FROM ROSS REEDMAKERS

When you receive your reeds, it is recommended that you slightly dampen them and, if necessary, pinch the reed
at the sound box.  Pinching the reed will ease it and allow an easier blowing-in experience.  You may pinch the
reed occasionally to maintain the ease of blowing.

If, after pinching the reed, you find the reed is still too strong, it may be necessary to slightly scrape the blades at
the lay (see figure 1 and 2).  Scrape only a little at a time, an even amount from both sides, using a very sharp
utility knife…scrape lightly!  You can scrape more off, but you can’t put it back.  A rubber band, placed just
above the black hemp, will assist in easing the reed too (see figure 2).

If you find your reed is flat on the ‘F’, or needs brightening, pinch the reed; applying a rubber band may help too.
If you have this problem with an easier reed, you can trim the tip of the blades with a very sharp knife.  Again, do
not take too much off at one time.

Hopefully, these tips will help give you more enjoyment from playing our reeds.
